Remember your first year of college? Was your head overloaded with too many questions and not enough answers? What’s the difference between Academic Advising and the Registrar? How do you fill out that Financial Aid paperwork? Where can you get a cheap slice of pizza? If you’re the sort of student that jumps at the chance to answer these types of questions, then becoming a Student Mentor is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for!
The Student Mentor Program consists of upperclassmen who act as role models for new students in a variety of ways, providing advice and support throughout the year. Mentors undergo a comprehensive ten-hour training workshop prior to the Fall semester and attend additional training sessions throughout the academic year.
Incoming students often meet the Mentors through their Orientation Seminar classes. Additionally, the Student Mentor Program supports Academic & Instructional Resources in a variety of activities throughout the year to promote connections and learning for the entire student body. Mentors also host Info Tables during the first week of classes, which are designed to provide new students with easy access to answers for some of their more pressing questions.
By becoming a Student Mentor you will receive special training in listening, counseling, public speaking and interpersonal skills, plus learn the ins-and-outs of increasing student success. In addition to acquiring these skills, workshops will be held to fulfill our primary goal: to be of significant value to students, to understand our campus’ diverse populations, to integrate resources, and to help promote individual involvement in University life as a whole.
The overall aim of the Student Mentor Program is to aid in the academic and social development of the students here at Long Island University, Brooklyn. It is our goal to help students make a successful adjustment to college, and to have a positive experience during their first year and beyond.
