In addition to serving as dean of graduate
and undergraduate admissions, Alan Chaves duties extend to
the overseeing of the department of athletics and the Campus
scholarship program. He has served as interim director of athletics
twice, most recently from November 1996 to June 1997.
Now into his 22nd year and a staunch supporter
of Long Island University athletics, he and his staff have been
instrumental in the tremendous growth of the campus.
Chaves has complete control of the admissions
and financial aid offices. Under his leadership and entrepreneurship
he has planned and implemented strategies for recruitment which
have resulted in an increase in enrollment of over 100 percent over
the past 10 years on the campus.
In September 1997, he began a three-year
stint as a member of the NCAA National Committee on Athletics Certification,
which reviews and grants athletic certification for all Division
I athletic programs in the U.S.
Chaves has 30 years of experience in college
admissions. Prior to his post at LIU he was director of admissions
at SUNY-College at Old Westbury. He also was director of community
relations for LaGuardia Community College.
He has served on several committees including
Middle States, Faculty Council, student services, budget advisory,
executive admissions, faculty representative and the council of
deans. He has also been participant and presenter at numerous national
conferences and guest speaker at many community affairs dealing
with higher education.
