Now in his 11th year at LIU and fourth year
in his current position, Scally is responsible for monitoring academic
progress so that the student-athlete meets and exceeds the Universitys
academic goals in compliance with NCAA and institutional standards.
Acting as a liaison among student-athletes,
their instructors and their coaches, he meets with and surveys instructors
regularly for progress reports and for recommendations as to how
to better manage the workload in each class.
Scally, along with the director and senior
associate director of athletics, has formed close relationships
with the academic advisement office and counseling center to assist
the student-athlete in negotiating the demands of daily practices
and games.
Last year, LIU athletes earned an overall
grade-point average of 3.05, the highest mark since the school has
been a member of the Northeast Conference.
In 2000-01, LIU athletes registered an overall
G.P.A. of 3.0 and were recognized by the NCAA and USA Today for
having the highest graduation rate in the nation as compared to
the remainder of the student body.
Scally earned a Bachelor of Science Degree
in athletic administration from St. Johns University in 1991.
He completed his Masters Degree in guidance and counseling
from LIU in 1997.
