Blackbirds Sign Brooklyn Tech's Yearwood
April 15, 1999

Brooklyn, NY - The Long Island University men's basketball program has received a National Letter of Intent from Brooklyn Tech High School point guard Maurice Yearwood to attend LIU in the fall. He becomes the fourth player to sign with the Blackbirds under first-year head coach Ray Martin. Yearwood joins forward Lee Jones (Albany, NY) and guards Keith Leslie (Queens, NY) and Antawn Dobie (Queens, NY), all of whom committed to LIU in the early signing period.

At 6'0" and noted as one of the top scholastic playmakers in New York City, Yearwood may have to step right in with the absence of graduated senior guard combination Karee Anderson and Issiah Francis. In his final year at Brooklyn Tech, Yearwood averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 assists per game.

"We are delighted to welcome Brooklynite Maurice Yearwood into our family," said Martin. " He is an outstanding all-around person, an excellent student and he fulfills our point guard needs for the future."

The Blackbirds ended the 1998-99 season with a record of 10-17 and were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast Conference Tournament.
