Women's
Basketball signs two Connecticut stars
June 24, 1999
Long Island has announced
the signings of two players to National Letters of Intent. Second-year
head coach Patty Delehanty will add Connecticut residents Ann
Calvert and Venessa Harwood to the 1999-2000 roster.
Calvert averaged 11.6
points and 8.5 rebounds-per-game for Kingswood-Oxford High School
this past season. A native of New Britain, CT, Calvert led the
seventh-seeded Kingswood-Oxford team to the New England Prep School
Championship game, where they lost to the top-seed by a point.
Harwood will transfer
to the Brooklyn Campus after a two-year stint at Mitchell Community
College. While at Mitchell, the Brooklyn, CT native, was named
NJCAA Second-Team All-America. Harwood averaged a NJCAA Division
II sixth-best 19.3 points-per-game and 10.8 rebounds-per-game,
as she led Mitchell to a Region XXI championship.
LIU will look to rebound
from an injury plagued 1998-99 season, which finished with an
overall record of 2-24 and a 2-18 mark in the Northeast Conference.
The Blackbirds return its top scorer and rebounder form a year
ago in Kellye Townsend (Columbia, MD) who averaged 12.0 points
and 8.4 rebounds-per-game.
