June 25, 1999

Brooklyn, NY - Jonathan Carter resigned as head men's and women's track and cross country coach on the Brooklyn Campus to train full-time for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Carter arrived at LIU in 1996 as an assistant coach and was named head coach the following year. During his tenure he developed numerous conference champions along with NCAA Provisional qualifiers Tisha Franklin ('97) and Fateen Abdel-Baaith ('98). He raised the program to its greatest heights ever as the women's squad placed second at the 1999 Northeast Conference Indoor Championships.

Ranked as high as 14th in the world at 100m in '99, Carter is currently associated with Fila Racing Club. A Florida native and a former 100m and 4x100m All-American at Florida State University, Carter will be doing most of his training in the Sunshine State in preparation for next summer's Games.

"Jonathan is pursuing his lifelong dream of competing in the Olympics and I couldn't be happier for him," said LIU director of athletics John Suarez. He has brought the track and cross country programs at LIU to another level and he leaves us in a position to become one of the areas top teams in the near future."
