Maurice Yearwood tabbed Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete

Long Island sophomore guard Maurice Yearwood (Brooklyn, NY/ Brooklyn Tech) today was named the Northeast Conference's Scholar-Athlete award winner for men's basketball.

Yearwood started all 26 games he appeared in this season and finished third for the Blackbirds with 11.2 points per game, averaged a team-best 2.9 assists and shot 76 percent from the line. He scored in double figures in 10 of his last 12 games, including a career-best 25 points against Mount St. Mary's on February 10.

A two-time Dean's List honoree and a member of LIU's Honors Program and Honors Society, Yearwood maintains a 3.67 grade-point average in Marketing and Management.

Among his many activities, Yearwood is a member of LIU's Student-Athlete Advisory committee, the NCAA Certification committee and Vice President of the National Honor Society. He has volunteered in the Reading Through Sports Program at P.S. 316 in Crown Heights and has been a mentor for children at the Jackie Robinson Program the last two years.

"It's all about time management and setting goals for myself and having the determination to strive for those goals," Yearwood said. "It's a day-to-day process and I am especially honored to receive this award."

The Blackbirds (12-16, 12-8 NEC) finished fourth in the Northeast Conference this season before being eliminated by Wagner in the quarterfinals.
