Antawn Dobie named first team All-NEC

Mar. 4, 2002

Long Island senior Antawn Dobie (Corona, NY) capped a stellar three-year career by being selected first team All-Northeast Conference.

A 6’0” combo guard, Dobie led the NEC in scoring (21.2 ppg), and also was second in assists (5.2 apg) and steals (2.3 spg) to become LIU's first All-NEC pick since Mike Campbell and Charles Jones in 1997-98. Dobie is the first Blackbird since Jones (29.0 ppg in 1997-98) to pace the NEC in scoring.

Dobie topped the conference with seven games of at least 30 points, including four in the last seven contests. He posted a season-high 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting in a win at Sacred Heart on February 20 and averaged 28.2 points over his final five games. In three seasons, Dobie totaled 1,131 points to rank 17th on LIU’s all-time scoring list. His 304 assists ranks fifth.

Dobie is joined on the first team by Rahsaan Johnson (Monmouth), Peter Mulligan (UMBC), Jermaine Hall (Wagner) and Player of the Year Corsley Edwards (Central Connecticut St.).

The Blackbirds dropped their first 16 games this season before winning five contests and making a late run for a spot in the NEC Tournament.

Ray Martin resigned as head coach after nine games and was replaced on an interim basis by Ron Brown. Elmont, NY native Jim Ferry was named Martin’s successor, effective April 1. Ferry is the head coach at Adelphi University, ranked fourth in the nation in Division II.
