Kim Mac
Millan hits a 3-pointer in her 54th consecutive game to break
the NCAA Division I record
Jan. 2, 2002
Junior Kim Mac Millan
(Toms River, NJ), one of the nations premier sharpshooters
and one of LIUs toughest athletes, hit a 3-pointer in her
54th straight game last Saturday to establish a new NCAA Division
I record.
Mac Millan set the
mark with 13:01 remaining in the Blackbirds 62-60 loss against
Buffalo in the consolation game of the DoubleTree Classic in New
Orleans. She fired home a shot from the top of the key to break
the mark previously shared with Sandy Brown, who set it from 1998-99
with Middle Tennessee State.
A preseason All-Northeast
Conference selection, Mac Millan began her streak January 29,
2000 against Wagner and has hit from beyond the arc in 69 of 70
games as a Blackbird. She is second for LIU (4-6) this season
with 15.7 points per game and has scored in double figures eight
times.
I think its
great, but Ive got to thank my teammates for letting me
take so many shots and for giving me the opportunity to accomplish
this, Mac Millan said. It means a lot because I was
not a 3-point threat in high school and I have made changes in
my approach since entering college.
It is a tremendous
accomplishment for Kim, head coach Tony Bozzella said. Anytime
you get your name in the NCAA record book, it shows you put forth
a lot of hard work and dedication and Kim has done just that.
Mac Millan already
is the schools all-time leader in 3-pointers with 246. She
holds the top two single-season marks for 3-pointers at LIU and
in the NEC with 108 last season and 103 in 1999-2000. Both totals
were good for second in the nation.
Mac Millans most
memorable performance this season occurred November 24 against
Morehead State at the Time Warner Classic in Binghamton, NY. She
drilled a career-high eight 3-pointers - all in the second half
- and scored 26 of her season-high 30 points in the closing half
to make the all-tournament team.
Success is nothing
new to Mac Millan, who is the one of the NECs most determined
and fearless athletes. She averaged a league-best 18.6 points
per game a season ago and shot 37 percent from 3-point range as
LIU captured its first NEC championship and its first berth in
the NCAA Tournament. Mac Millan was named to the All-NEC, All-Met
and all-tournament teams as the Blackbirds (16-15) posted their
greatest win total since 1976-77.
Another record Mac
Millan is record to topple is the schools all-time scoring
mark. She is tied with Karlene Osborne (1984-88) for second place
with 1,327 points and needs 16 to equal the mark held by Dawn
Coleman (1994-98).
Mac Millan looks to
break the record Saturday when the Blackbirds visit Sacred Heart
on Saturday at 2:00 in Fairfield, CT.
