Kim Mac
Millan becomes LIUs all-time leading scorer with 1,345 career
points
Jan. 5, 2002
Junior Kim Mac Millan
(Toms River, NJ), one of the nations premier sharpshooters
and one of LIUs toughest athletes, became the schools
all-time leading scorer Saturday in the Blackbirds 71-63
Northeast Conference victory over Sacred Heart.
Mac Millan broke the
record on a free throw with 17.4 seconds remaining. The 5-7 guard
finished with 18 points and has 1,345 career, bettering the mark
of 1,343 set by Dawn Coleman (1994-98).
The feat occurred one
game after becoming the NCAA Division I leader for most consecutive
games with a 3-pointer, December 29 against Buffalo. Mac Millan
finished Saturdays contest 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6
from beyond the arc, extending her streak to 55 straight games.
A preseason All-Northeast
Conference selection, Mac Millan is second for LIU (5-6, 2-0 NEC)
with 15.9 points per game and has scored in double figures nine
times. She is averaging 18.5 points against the NEC in the young
season.
Mac Millan already
is the schools all-time leader in 3-pointers with 250. She
holds the top two single-season marks for 3-pointers at LIU and
in the NEC with 108 last season and 103 in 1999-2000. Both totals
were good for second in the nation.
Mac Millans most
memorable performance this season occurred November 24 against
Morehead State at the Time Warner Classic in Binghamton, NY. She
drilled a career-high eight 3-pointers - all in the second half
- and scored 26 of her season-high 30 points in the closing half
to make the all-tournament team.
Success is nothing
new to Mac Millan, who is the one of the NECs most determined
and fearless athletes. She averaged a league-best 18.6 points
per game a season ago and shot 37 percent from 3-point range as
LIU captured its first NEC championship and its first berth in
the NCAA Tournament. Mac Millan was named to the All-NEC, All-Met
and all-tournament teams as the Blackbirds (16-15) posted their
greatest win total since 1976-77.
LIU can match the school
record for its best NEC start with a win Monday against St. Francis
(NY). Tipoff is 7:00 at the Pope Center in Brooklyn Heights.
