Tony Bozzella resigns as Women's Basketball coach to take similar post at Iona

Apr. 19, 2001

Tony Bozzella, head women’s basketball coach at Long Island University, resigned to take the same job at Iona College.

Bozzella, 36, took over a program in June 2000 that went 13-16 the previous season and proceeded to guide the Blackbirds to a 34-27 mark over two campaigns. That run included the school’s first Northeast Conference championship and first NCAA Tournament berth in 2001, and a return trip to the NEC final this past season.

In addition to Bozzella, assistant coaches Christi Abbate and Bill Carpenter also will be taking similar jobs at Iona.

A national search will begin immediately to find his successor.
