Late rally falls shorts as Women's Soccer drops 2-1 decision to Quinnipiac

Oct. 4, 2002

Freshman Holly Nixon (Burlington, Ontario) tallied her first career goal in the 82nd minute, but Long Island saw its comeback bid fall short in a 2-1 Northeast Conference loss to Quinnipiac at LIU Field.

Nixon ran on to a ball from senior Rosette Rough (Carson City, NV) and deposited it past goalkeeper Heather Allen. After that, LIU (3-7, 1-1 NEC) continued to apply pressure but was unable to notch the equalizer.

Rough's assist was her 30th career point, moving into sole possession of fourth place on the school's all-time list. Senior Laura Brosious (Williamstown, NJ) is third with 32.

The Bobcats (1-7-1, 1-1-1) broke on top just 45 seconds into the match. Kellie Buccinni booted a home a pass by freshman Nicole Martin inside the top right corner past sophomore goalie Kristin Skinner (Yorba Linda, CA).

The contest remained 1-0 until the 66th minute, when Quinnipiac's Lauren Carmody punched in the insurance tally off a scramble in front. Leandra Price was credited with the assist.

LIU outshot Quinnipiac, 9-7, and attempted nine corner kicks. Allen had to come up with only two saves and Skinner made just one.

The Blackbirds return to action Sunday at home against Central Connecticut State at 1:00 pm.
