Information
about the School of Continuing Studies
Non-credit
Courses and Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Most of the
courses on this web-site are "non-credit" courses and
may not be applied to degree programs; they are designed, instead,
as components of continuing education certificate programs, or as
individual courses of interest to adults.
Just as credits
have made it possible to carry degree work from one school to another,
so the "CEU" is used nationally to document the type,
quality and duration of non-credit work.
A CEU is defined
as being equal to 10 class-hours in a course where grades are issued.
To earn CEUs the grade must be A, B+,B, C+,C or Pass.

Financial
Aid (Student Loans)
Financial aid, in the form of student loans, is now available for
Continuing Studies students enrolled in non-credit certificate programs.
You must be enrolled in a certificate program to qualify.
Loans are made available through the alternative loan program sponsored
by many lending institutions, and are based on your credit worthiness
and ability to repay the loan. Interest rates are based on the prime
lending rate, and repayment begins six months after completion of
the program. Applicants must have a satisfactory credit history
of at least two years.
You must apply for your loan at least one week prior to the
start of the course for which you intend to use it. A loan applicant
will be accepted or pre-registered for a course but will not be
fully registered until the loan has been certified by Student
Financial Services at Long Island University and approved by the
bank. Financial aid information is available at Financial Services
(S-310) or the School of Continuing Studies (9 Hanover Place - 2nd floor).

the case of a student taking a single course, if a loan application
