Derek Hurley Joins Baseball Coaching Staff

 

 

12/5/05 -- A former standout pitcher at Seton Hall University, Derek Hurley has joined the Long Island University baseball coaching staff, head coach Don Maines announced. He will serve as the team’s pitching coach.

After an outstanding career at Moore Catholic HS, the Staten Island, N.Y. native starred a relief pitcher for the Pirates from 1998-99. As a senior, the southpaw registered two wins and compiled 30 strikeouts over 41.0 innings. Following the season, Hurley was drafted in the 30th round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After four seasons in the Pirates organization, Hurley played one season for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League.

Most recently, Hurley was a featured instructor at the Academy of Pro Players in 2004. This past January, Hurley was named the supervisor of instructors at the Garfield, N.J. academy.
