8/15/06 -–The
60th Little League Baseball World Series features 16 teams
from around the world, including a team from Staten Island.
Mid-Island is coached by Nick Doscher, a former Long Island
University standout pitcher and assistant coach.
On Monday evening in Bristol, Conn., Doscher’s
team secured a bid to the highest stage for 11 and 12 year
olds by winning
the Mid-Atlantic regional. A walk-off home run in the sixth inning
propelled the squad to a 2-1 victory over New Jersey Livingston
American and a trip to the L.L. World Series.
Doscher, a Staten Island native,
was among the first group of recruits signed by longtime former
Blackbird skipper Frank Giannone
in 1977. The righty had four consecutive winning seasons on the
mound, earning All-Met honors his sophomore season with a 0.38
ERA in eight assignments. Doscher went on to spend seven seasons
as an assistant coach at his alma mater.
