4/11/06 -- Long
Island University fell behind early and could not make a late
comeback in a 10-4 loss at NYIT on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Robbie Rowen (Rosendale,
N.Y.) drove in three of the Blackbirds four runs on the day.
Senior Matt Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had two of LIU's
seven hits.
The Bears opened up a 6-0 lead
in the second inning, taking advantage of four LIU errors.
Tom
Murray
started the scoring with his first homerun of the season, a solo
shot over the right field fence. Miscues led to four of the last
five runs in the frame.
A run in the third by the Blackbirds
made the score 6-1. Sophomore Danny Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
singled and scored on Rowen's sacrifice fly to center field
for the tally.
After two runs in both the fourth
and the fifth innings made the score 10-1, LIU mounted a comeback
attempt in the top of the ninth. Freshman Anthony Amatucci
(Toms River, N.J.) walked to lead off and fellow classmate
Frank
DiMasi (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled to center
to start the threat.
After a walk loaded the bases,
sophomore Danny Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch
with two
outs to score Amatucci. Rowen followed with a double to the
left center field gap that scored two more. But the rally would
come up short as junior James Adamo grounded out to first
to
end the ballgame.
Junior John Dooley (Deer Park,
N.Y.) dropped to 0-3 on the season on the hill. Sophomore Mike
Castoria (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched three innings of one-hit
ball in relief for LIU. Chris Perez struck out a season-best
12 batters over seven innings to pick up the victory for NYIT.
LIU continues conference play
on Friday, April 14 with a home doubleheader against Fairleigh
Dickinson and 12:00 p.m.
