4/26/06 -- Long Island University dropped its second straight extra innings contest in as many days, falling to NYIT, 7-3 Wednesday afternoon at LIU Field in collegiate baseball action.

Senior Sean Durkin (Damascus, Md.) had three hits of the team’s 11 hits, which dropped to 8-23-1.

With the Bears holding a 1-0 edge, LIU erupted for two runs in the fourth to take the lead. Durkin earned a walk to commence the frame and advanced to second when a grounder from Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) was misplayed by the third baseman. Senior Matt Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielder’s choice, this one botched by the shortshop Mike MacMillan.

With the bases loaded, junior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) hit a sharp grounder to third as Durkin dashed home on the fielder’s choice. Wynn stole second and a throwing by the catcher allowed Rowen to score, giving the Blackbirds a 2-1 advantage.

LIU tacked on a run in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Durkin led off the inning with a double to left center and scored two batters later on a single through the left side from Rowen.

The Bears answered in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring a run in each frame. MacMillan singled with two outs in the eighth. The next batter, Joe Esposito, laced a single into right field to pull the visitors to within a run. David Johnson opened the ninth, taking the first pitch into left field. After an out and stealing second, Johnson beat the throw at home on a single by Tom Murray to tie the contest at 3-3.

NYIT used a three-hit attack and took advantage of a Blackbird error to score four runs in the tenth. A two-run double by Bryan Pastor highlighted the inning for the Bears.

LIU travels to Columbia on Saturday, April 29 for a non-conference tilt scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
