-- Junior third baseman Robbie Rowen was named the
Akadema Northeast Conference Baseball Player of the Week
for the week of April 30-May 7, as announced by the conference
today. The selection marks the first time this season a Blackbird
has won the award.
Rowen batted .625 (10-for-16)
with five runs scored, one home run and three runs batted in
as he helped
lead LIU to a pair
of conference wins over Mount St. Mary’s over the weekend.
He opened the week with a 3-for-5 performance which included
an RBI and stolen base in a 5-4 setback to Fordham on Tuesday.
In a doubleheader split at Mount
St. Mary’s
on Saturday, Rowen went 3-for-6 and collected two RBI over
the two games.
He tallied his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in
a 6-2 nightcap win to help LIU snap a nine-game losing skid.
The
Rosendale,
N.Y. native continued his hot hitting in the Sunday rubber match
with Mount, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored as the Blackbirds
won their second straight, 13-3.
On the season, Rowen tops Long Island with 21 RBI and ranks
second in batting average (.303), hits (43) and total bases (51).
