3/5/06 -- The Long Island University baseball team opened its 2006
campaign this Saturday at the University of Maryland-Eastern
Shore,
dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 5-3. The second
game was tied at 1-1 after seven innings but was called due
to darkness.
The opening doubleheader on Saturday saw the Blackbirds jump
out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The first three
batters all reached base and scored, thanks in part to three
errors by the UMES defense. Senior Tim Doherty (Newark, Del.)
and junior James Adamo (Paramus, N.J.) each drove in a run in
the frame.
After scoring two in the bottom half of the first, UMES tied
the game at 3-3 on an unearned run in the second. Two of the
first three runs scored by the Hawks were unearned. The Blackbirds
were plagued by miscues all day, totaling seven errors in the
contest.
A single by Morgan Schirmer scored
Justin Hoban in the third to give UMES its first lead of the
game, 4-3. The Hawks
would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to
help preserve the victory.
Junior Rich Moran (Carmel, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser in
the opener. The righthander went seven innings and allowed a
pair of earned runs while striking out three.
In the nightcap, both teams were stifled by strong pitching.
Junior Mike Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) and UMES starter Dustin
Longchamps kept each opposing offense scoreless through the first
five innings.
LIU was able to break through in the sixth inning. A leadoff
walk to senior Sean Durkin (Damascus, Md.) began the scoring
sequence. After Doherty advance him to second and a wild pitch
allowed the shortstop to reach third base, a fly ball by freshman
Frank DiMasi (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated Durkin to give the
Blackbirds a 1-0 lead.
An error on Long Island allowed the Hawks to score the game-tying
run in the bottom half of the sixth. With two outs and runners
on first and third, a throwing error allowed Eric Gaines to cross
the plate.
Each team traded scoreless innings in the seventh before the
game was called due to darkness. Maynard went six innings, allowing
an unearned run while scattering three hits and striking out
seven. Longchamps went the distance, also striking out seven
LIU batters.
Junior Robert Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) added two hits for the
Blackbirds.
