3/19/06 -- The Long Island University
baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision at Villanova on Sunday
in Plymouth
Meeting, Pa. in its final
game of the Villanova Baseball Bash.
Freshman Kenny Cedel (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the hard-luck
loser on the mound for the Blackbirds. In the longest outing
of his short career, Cedel went 6 1/3 innings while allowing
two runs and seven hits. Junior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.)
had a pair of hits and reached base three times for LIU.
After three runs in the bottom half of the eighth gave Villanova
a 5-1 advantage, the Blackbirds looked poised to mount a comeback.
Two walks to Wynn and junior James Adamo (Paramus, N.J.) sandwiched
an infield single by freshman Anthony Amatucci (Toms River, N.J.)
to load the bases. With two outs and the tying run at the plate,
senior Pete Orsi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) popped out to the pitcher to
end the game.
LIU got off to a quick start,
taking a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Senior Sean Durkin (Damascus,
Md.) singled up the
middle to lead off the game and advanced to third on a stolen
base and subsequent error on the shortstop. Junior Robert Rowen
(Rosendale, N.Y.) scored Durkin with an infield single to short.
After Villanova scored a run in the bottom of the third to tie
the game at 1-1, senior Jeremy Hunt took advantage of windy conditions
that was carrying the ball all afternoon. The first baseman wrapped
a ball around the foul pole down the right field line for his
third home run of the season that gave the Wildcats a lead they
would not relinquish. Hunt and Kris Molloy each finished with
two hits for Villanova. Ted Aust picked up the victory on the
mound, going a career-best eight innings.
The Blackbirds continue their season on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at
3:00 p.m. against Rhode Island.
