Baseball Drops Two to Wagner In Northeast Conference Doubleheader

5/13/06 -- The Long Island University baseball team dropped a Northeast Conference baseball doubleheader against Wagner on Saturday afternoon in Staten Island, N.Y. The Seahawks won game one with a 5-1 count and took game two, 7-5.

In game one, junior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) led off the first inning with a home run to right field. Wagner’s Chris Drechsel tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Mike Picarello.
The Seahawks sealed the win with a two-run homer by Matt Mastrianni in the fifth.

In game two, Wagner scored four in the bottom of the first. The Blackbirds chipped away at the lead with a home run by junior Orlando Cruz (White Plains, N.Y.) and a Dan Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) RBI single to center to bring Wynn home, cutting the margin to 4-2 in the third frame.

In the sixth, senior Sean Durkin (Damascus, Md.) led off with a single to right center and stole second during the following play. NEC Player of the Week Robbie Rowan (Rosendale, N.Y.) was walked as Durkin advanced to third on a wild pitch. LIU tied the game at 4-4 with scores from Durkin and Rowen off an error by the Seahawks’ Pete Delleani.

Wagner posted three runs in the next inning to take a 7-4 advantage. Durkin plated Wynn with an RBI but it was not enough as the Blackbirds fell, 7-5.
LIU will wrap up the Wagner series on Sunday, May 14. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
