-- Long Island University first baseman James Jones (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) picked up his second Akadema/Northeast Conference Rookie
of the Week award after a fine performance last week. Jones hit
.429 as the Blackbirds went 3-2 over their last five games.
Jones drove in at least a run in each of the
five games, totaling eight RBIs on the week. He also doubled,
homered and scored four
runs as Long Island won its first series of the season, taking
three games from Fairleigh Dickinson. Jones picked up a win on
the mound in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader
against the Knights. He struck out five in five innings of work.
Jones is hitting .288 on the season with four home runs, nine
doubles and three triples.
The Blackbirds (12-34, 6-17 NEC) will host Rider at KeySpan
Park on Tuesday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m., before wrapping up their
season with a four-game series against Central Connecticut State
beginning on Friday, May 18 at LIU Field.
