-- Long Island University first baseman James Jones (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) picked up his third Akadema/Northeast Conference Rookie of
the Week award after a solid performance as the Blackbirds closed
out their season with a four-game sweep over Central Connecticut
State. The award was the second consecutive honor for Jones, who
batted .429 with a double and three runs over five games last week.
He went 2-for-4 and scored once in a 9-5 setback
to Rider on May 15, then finished 2-for-4 with a double and
a run in a 7-6,
10-inning win over the Blue Devils in the series opener on May
18. In the triumphant win Jones also went six innings on the
mound, allowing four earned runs while striking out eight in
a no-decision. In Sunday’s season finale, he stroked a
pinch-hit single in the 10th inning and scored the winning run
as the Blackbirds completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory.
Jones finished his campaign season with a .299 average to go
along with four home runs and a team-high 32 RBIs. He also struck
out 47 batters in 49 2/3 innings on the mound.
