-– The Long Island University baseball team split a doubleheader at Longwood. The Blackbirds (4-12) fell 8-6 in the first game before taking the second game, 6-4. Senior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.Y.) had a big day, driving in four runs and hitting a home run.

In the first game, Long Island jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Orlando Cruz (White Plains, N.Y.) doubled to scored classmate Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.), who had reached on a single. Longwood struck back in the fourth inning, plating a pair of runs on RBI singles by Frank Berry II and Scott Kimble. A two-run home run by Wynn put the Blackbirds back on top, 3-2, in the top of the fifth.

The Lancers answered right back in the bottom of the inning, when Tyler Childress’ three-run double knocked Blackbirds starter Rich Moran (Carmel, N.Y.) out of the game. Moran (0-4) lasted four-plus innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks. Longwood added three more runs in the inning off reliever John Dooley (Deer Park, N.Y.) to take an 8-3 lead.

Long Island scored a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double by catcher Chris Kievit (Wayne, N.J.) and a run-scoring single by Wynn. The Blackbirds threatened in the ninth, with junior Dan Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) stroking a pinch-hit single to score pinch runner Jimmy Lopovich (Staten Island, N.Y.), but that was all the offense Long Island could muster.

In the second game, the Blackbirds once again took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Cruz forced the first run home by drawing a bases-loaded, no-out walk. Freshman James Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed by hitting into a fielder’s choice, allowing senior Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.) to score. After Jones was caught stealing for the second out, Wynn delivered again, this time with another RBI single.

Longwood got on the board in the bottom of the third when back-to-back doubles by Casey Havers and Jon Quigley plated a pair of runs. Long Island added another run to increase its lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Rowen’s sacrifice fly scored freshman Gerard Tingos (Staten Island, N.Y.). Longwood cut the score to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning when Childress hit a ball back to pitcher Mike Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.). Maynard threw Childress out at first, but Kimble scored on the play.

Long Island added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, when Rowen drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Maynard (2-1) pitched five-plus innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out four. Rowen picked up the save with two innings of three-hit, one-run ball.

The Blackbirds and Lancers will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday, April 1 at noon.
