-- The Long Island University baseball team suffered a
10-2 defeat at the hands of New York Tech at President's Field.
The Blackbirds scored runs in the top of both the fifth and sixth
innings, but NYIT responded with two runs in the bottom half of
each inning and capped things off with a six-run eighth to seal
the game.
Long Island (6-17) got on the
scoreboard first when senior Trey Bell's (Georgetown, Del.)
one-out single plated a run in the fifth. The Bears (9-12)
turned the tide in the bottom half of the frame when Joe Lucente
and Brian Smith each knocked in runs with singles.
The Blackbirds tied the game
once again in the sixth when freshman Greg DeSantis (Bridgewater,
N.J.) singled home senior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) with
one out. NYIT took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth,
scoring two unearned runs in an inning that featured three
Long Island errors.
NYIT tacked on six runs in the
bottom of the eighth to put things out of reach for the Blackbirds.
Sophomore Kenny Cedel (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the loss,
dropping to 0-4. In six innings, he allowed four hits, four
runs (one earned) and one walk. He struck out four.
Long Island will return to conference
play this weekend with a three-game series at Monmouth. Play
begins on Friday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m.
