4/30/05 --
Junior Sean Durkin (Damascus, Md.) ripped an infield single
in the 11th inning to lift Long Island to an 8-7 triumph over
Central Connecticut State in game two of a Northeast Conference
baseball doubleheader at LIU Field. The Blackbirds (11-18,
7-10 NEC) captured a 3-2 victory in the first contest.
Junior Trey Bell (Georgetown,
Del.) laced a two-run double -- one of four hits -- to start
the fourth extra frame and classmate Nate Olson (Poland,
Maine) reached base after Blue Devils reliever Mark Peterson
grazed him. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt
by pitcher Pete Orsi (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Durkin ripped the 2-2
pitch to diving shortstop Sean Salvatore as Bell slid head first
home for the winning tally.
The teams traded runs in the
early innings with the score knotted at 2-2 after 5 1/2 frames.
The Blackbirds went ahead, 3-2, on a seeing-eye single from
Olsen in the sixth
only to leave
two runners stranded after a groundout double play.
The Blue Devils (13-22, 6-11)
brought out the bats in the seventh, scoring four runs
on four hits. With one out, Salvatore
ripped an RBI double to knot the contest, 3-3. Seth Brown and
Scott Appleton followed with RBI singles to push CCSU to a commanding
6-3 lead.
LIU refused to go quietly in
the bottom half, plating three runs on three hits to tie the
contest and force
extra innings.
The rally began after sophomore Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.)
reached on a fielder’s choice and then advanced to second
on a single from catcher Tim Doherty (Newark, Del.). Wynn scored
on a single from Robert Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) as Doherty moved
to second.
A wild pitch from hurler Todd
Ruder moved the two base runners to second and third, respectively.
A sacrifice from Chris Bresica
(Nanuet, N.Y.) and an RBI single from Olson evened the contest
at 6-6.
Each team added a run in the
tenth before LIU’s
dramatic finish in the next inning.
Orsi (2-1) threw one frame, yielding no hits or runs. Peterson
(2-6) suffered the loss for CCSU, giving up three hits and the
game-winning run.
Junior designated hitter Matt
Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in two runs and sophomore
Richard Moran
(Carmel, N.Y.)
pitched solidly, yielding two runs -- both unearned -- and
six hits over 6 2/3 innings for LIU.
The Blackbirds rapped three consecutive hits to grab a 2-0 lead
in the fourth inning. With two outs, Brescia commenced the rally
with a base hit up the middle.
Martino laced a two-out triple down the right field line, plating
Brescia for the game’s first run. Freshman Danny Etkin
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with a single through the infield
to score Martino for a 2-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils scored two runs
in the seventh and still had two runners aboard when Brescia
-- in relief -- closed the door, striking out Brown
looking to end the threat and earn his first save of the season.
The teams play the final game
of the three-game series Sunday, beginning at 12:00 pm.
