Junior Tim Doherty (Newark, Del.) rapped three hits for Long
Island, which was detitle a 9-6 Northeast Conference loss at
Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J.
The Blackbirds (5-11, 2-4 NEC)
scored once in the top of the second inning for a 1-1 contest.
Junior Matt Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk,
reached third on a pair of singles and scored on a sacrifice
fly from freshman Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
The Hawks (10-15, 4-4) proceeded
to score four runs in the third and three in the fourth for
an 8-1 game. Marc Weres had the big hit in that stretch with
a two-run triple in the third inning.
LIU began a rally with three
seven-inning runs. Doherty scored on a wild pitch, sophomore
Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) had an RBI double and junior
Nathan Olson (Poland, Maine) contributed a run-scoring groundout
for an 8-4 contest.
Wynn in the eighth reached on
an error by Weres at third base to score Doherty and sophomore
Santos
Collazo
(Staten Island, N.Y.) as LIU moved to 8-6, but could get no
closer.
Matt Bunyan (Belle Harbor, N.Y.)
allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- and eight hits over three
innings with two strikeouts for the Blackbirds.
Cipriano Apicelli struck out
five for Monmouth, permitting one run and six hits over six
innings.
LIU visits St. Francis (NY) on
Wednesday for an NEC doubleheader, starting at 12:00 pm. The
contests will take place at the Narrows Complex in Brooklyn. |
