Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Quinnipiac in NEC Opener for Both Teams

 

 


3/25/05 -- Long Island University split its Northeast Conference opening weekend games with Quinnipiac University, a 2-0 triumph in game two and a 4-2 setback in the first contest, at LIU Field on Friday afternoon.

In the second game, the Blackbirds (3-7, 1-1 NEC) plated two runs in the sixth inning of a seven-inning affair. After leaving five runners stranded in the first five innings, LIU broke the contest open in the sixth.

Junior Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.)- 3-for-3 in the game- singled to open the inning and advanced to second when Marcus Wynn walked. Bell moved to third on an errant throw by Bobcats catcher Kevin MacIlvane and scored on a sacrifice fielder’s choice from Matthew Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Four batters later and with the bases loaded, James Adamo (Paramus, N.J.) drilled an RBI single past diving third baseman John Delaney to plate Martino.

Sophomore Richard Moran (Carmel, N.Y.) was solid on the mound for LIU, allowing five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings en route to the shutout.
For the Bobcats, Ari Kafka took the loss giving up just three hits and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

In the first contest, hurler Pat Egan tossed a five-hit effort while striking out seven to lead Quinnipiac to a 4-2 victory.

The Bobcats got on the board in the fifth inning with a two out rally. John Simone blasted a double to left field and scored on a liner from Ryan Rizzo.

LIU countered in the bottom frame with a two-out push of its own when shortstop Sean Durkin drilled a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for the equalizer.

Quinnipiac answered in the sixth with a pair of runs. Bryan Sabatella opened the frame with a ground rule double to right and teammate Brien Magee followed with a RBI single into the same field for the winning tally.

LIU starter Matthew Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell to 1-2 on the season. He posted four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings while giving up six hits.
