Bryan Burke Named NEC Baseball Rookie of the Week

3/7/05 -- Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) today was named Northeast Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week after helping Long Island take two of three games last weekend at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Burke batted .333 (4-for-12) with a homer and eight RBI last week. He rapped a two-run single on Saturday to help the Blackbirds (2-1) pull away for a 7-3 victory after his team dropped the opener, 5-4 in nine innings. He played an even bigger role in Sunday’s 19-12 triumph, clubbing a grand slam and driving in six runs in addition to going 3-for-6.

Burke enters LIU after a decorated high school career in which he batted .390 a season ago, helping Lindenhurst High School grab a number one ranking in Suffolk County. He also attended the 2004 Baseball Factory All-American weekend at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla.

The Blackbirds return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Coppin State beginning at 12:00 pm.
