Baseball Loses, 17-3, at Sacred Heart

5/8/05 -- Long Island was detitle a 17-3 Northeast Conference loss in the rubber game of its three-game series in Waterbury, Conn.

Sophomore Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) had an RBI in the third inning when he reached on an error for LIU (12-22, 8-13 NEC). Junior Nate Olson (Poland, Maine) roped a run-scoring single in the fourth and freshman Danny Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added an RBI single in the sixth.

The Pioneers (18-27, 15-6) benefited from seven Blackbirds' errors overall and held an 11-1 lead after three innings. They scored six times in the third inning on just one hit.

Belle Harbor, N.Y. junior Matt Bunyan (0-8) allowed only one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Junior Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.) had two hits and is batting .538 (7-for-13) during a six-game hitting streak.

Chris Howard (1-5) permitted three runs -- two earned -- and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings for Sacred Heart and Dave Kaloyanides had three hits.

LIU returns to action Tuesday at Hofstra for a 3:30 pm start.
