4/6/2005 – Long Island University suffered a 14-2 setback at Towson University in college baseball action yesterday afternoon.

Sophomore Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) belted a lead-off homer down the right field line to give LIU a 1-0 edge. However, the lead was short lived as the Tigers plated a run on a wild pitch. Mark Chiccini singled to center to bring home Casper Wells as Towson took a 2-1 advantage into the second.

Jason Maxey hit his first of three homers to lead off the second stanza, and extend the Tigers lead to 3-1. Towson opened a commanding lead over the next two frames, plating three in the third and again in the fourth.

In the sixth, the Blackbirds took advantage of two errors, as junior Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.) scored closing the margin to 9-2. The Tigers put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning.

Wells led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Pat Fields before Maxey hit his third home run. A bases-loaded walk capped off the four-run inning and gave Towson a 13-2 lead. The Tigers added their final score in the eighth.

Playing in their first game in almost a week, the Blackbirds had six base hits against five Tigers pitchers. Wynn paced LIU with two hits, as he smashed a double in the fifth to go with his lead-off homer.

Senior Christopher Brescia (Nanuet, N.Y.) also recorded a pair of hits for the Blackbirds. Junior Matt Bunyan (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss for LIU.

The Blackbirds return to action this weekend as they will play a three-game series at NEC foe Monmouth. The doubleheader on Saturday begins at noon.
