Island exploded for a 19-12 triumph over University of Maryland Eastern
Shore, in college baseball action on Sunday
afternoon.
Freshman Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went 3-for-6 including
a grand slam and knocked in a team-high six runs for the Blackbirds
(2-1).
Sophomore Michael Maynard (Staten
Island, N.Y.) tossed 5 2/3 innings to get the win, allowing
two runs on 11 hits, walking none and fanning three. Junior
Peter Orsi (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) and freshman Andy Yawger (Morristown, N.J.) pitched in
relief for the Blackbirds.
A trio of Blackbirds enjoyed success at the plate as Junior
Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.) went 3-for-6 and sophomores Robert
Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) and Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) went
2-for-4, respectively.
Bell and Rowen got off to a good
start, smashing back-to-back doubles as LIU took a 3-0 lead
in the first inning. The Fighting
Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, two
more in the second and three in the third for a 7-3 advantage.
After two scoreless innings,
LIU exploded in the fourth recording eight runs on five hits.
Six of the
runs came with two
outs. UMES answered with two more in the bottom of the inning
to cut the Blackbirds lead to 11-9.
Burke open blew the game in the
eighth, blasting a shot to right with the bases loaded to give
the
Blackbirds a commanding 17-9
advantage.
