Blackbirds Fall to Rhode Island, 7-2

3/22/05 -- Long Island University fell to Rhode Island, 7-2, in college baseball action at LIU Field this afternoon.

Sophomore Robert Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, but it was not enough as the Blackbirds dropped their home opener.

LIU surrendered a run in the first when Scott Brown doubled to give the Rams a 1-0 edge. The Blackbirds responded in the third as junior Matt Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) stole third and scored on an errant throw by the catcher.

In the fifth, Rhode Island jumped to a 4-1 lead as Josh Nestor opened the inning with a double.

The Rams added another in the eighth frame to take a 5-1 lead. LIU battled back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Rowen singled to bring home freshman Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and cut the Rams’ advantage to 5-2. Sophomore Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) walked to load the bases, but junior Tim Doherty (Newark, Del.) grounded out to end the inning.

The Blackbirds surrendered two runs in the ninth. Adam Perkins got the win, allowing two runs and eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. Mick Lefort pitched 1 1/3 scoreless frames for the save.

Freshman Andy Yawger (Morristown, N.J.) went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and fanning four for the loss. Burke had a strong outing for LIU, going 2-for-4.

The Blackbirds open Northeast Conference play Friday, March 25 at home against Quinnipiac in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
