5/3/05 -- Senior Chris Brescia (Nanuet, N.Y.) lined an RBI single, but it was not enough for Long Island in a 7-1 loss at Villanova in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

The Blackbirds (11-20) scored their lone run in the third inning to pull within 2-1. Freshman Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) laced a leadoff single through the left side and raced to third on a single up the middle by sophomore Robert Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.). Two batters later, Brescia singled up the middle to score Burke.

The Wildcats (25-16-2) scored a run in the fifth on Derek Shunk’s sacrifice fly and added four in the eighth for the final margin. Kelly Pickel had an RBI single in eighth and Darren Griffith followed with a two-run triple.

Morristown, N.J. freshman Andy Yawger (1-2) permitted three runs and four hits over six innings for the Blackbirds. Brescia and junior Tim Doherty (Newark, Del.) had two hits apiece for LIU, which gained a 9-7 advantage.

Frank Jankowski (1-0) surrendered one run and eight hits over seven innings for Villanova. Pickel, Griffith and Robert Parks each closed with two hits and Jeremy Hunt roped a two-run double in the first.

LIU visits Sacred Heart for an NEC doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is at 10:00 am at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.
