Natalie Desjardins Tabbed Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Rookie of the Year; Chong, Wilson and Nicholson Earn All-League Honors

 

6/19/06 -- Long Island University freshman Natalie Desjardins was selected Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Rookie of the Year in a vote by conference head coaches and released on Monday.

The first-year player finished tied for fifth at the 2006 NEC Tournament with a two-day score of 161 (87-74). On the season, the Haileybury, Ontario product tallied six top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish at the ECAC Championship in October.

In addition, she captured her first career victory at the Fairfield Invitational in March. The All-NEC performer and two-time NEC Player of the Week averaged 81.1 strokes per round with eight sub-80 scores.

Joining Desjardins on the all-conference squad is teammate Erica Chong. The only returnee on this year’s team, Chong finished third individually at the NEC Championships with a two-day score of 157 (78-79). The Blackbirds0 - as a team - fired an NEC tournament-low final-round 319 to finish second.

On the men’s side, junior Matt Wilson (Toronto, Canada) had a final-round 73 at the NEC Men’s Golf Championships to tie for second and earn all-conference honors. Freshman Greg Nicolson (Edinburgh, Scotland) joins Wilson on all-conference squad with his tie for tenth place at 154.

The Blackbird men took third at the two-day event, four strokes behind first-place St. Francis (Pa.).
