Men's Golf In Third Place After Day One of Towson Fall Invitational

 

9/19/06 -- In its first tournament of the season, the Long Island University men’s golf team finished the first day of the Towson Fall Invitational in third place with a 292 at Musket Ridge Golf Course in Myersville, Md. on Monday.

Senior Patrick Kelly (Brisbane, Austrailia) and sophomore Greg Nicolson (Edinburgh, Scotland) each shot even-par 72 to put them in a tie for ninth place. Sophomore Rob Gallagher (Morganton, N.C.) shot a career-best 73 for a tie for 13th.

Nicolson carded five birdies and five bogeys in a round that saw him go two-over on the front nine, then follow it up with a two-under-par back to even up his round.

After a two-birdie, three-bogey front, Kelly tallied two birdies and a lone bogey on the par-3 13th after the turn to finish even for the round.

Senior Matt Wilson (Toronto, Ontario) finished the day in a tie for 25th at three-over-par 75. The left-hander finished the day one-under on the par-three’s to tie with Gallagher and a host of others in second place. As a team, the Blackbirds finished second in both par-three (+2) and par-four (+11) scoring, but could not take advantage of the long par-five’s (+3).

Boston College leads the overall team competition at 282 (-6). Jan Prokop of the Eagles shot a five-under-par 67 to take a two-stroke lead over teammate Robert Reed. The second day of the tournament will commence at 7:52 a.m. on Tuesday off of split tees.
