3/9/06 -- The
Long Island University women's golf team, along with St.
Francis (PA), have been selected co-favorites to
win the 2006 NEC Women’s Golf Championship in a poll of
league head coaches. The Blackbirds and Red Flash received three
first place votes each.
LIU captured
its first-ever NEC team title in 2005, while St. Francis (PA)
has
won the championship
in five of the
seven years the NEC has sponsored women’s golf.
Head coach Michael Michaelides will
have to replace 2005 NEC Golfer of the Year Shauna Wilde and
three other seniors
as the Blackbirds look to defend their crown.
Junior Erica Chong
(Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) is the lone upperclassman on the Blackbird
roster. A 2004 all-NEC selection, Chong finished tied for 17th
at the 2005 NEC Championship.
The rest of the
LIU line-up features two sophomores in Heather Wolfe (Honeoye
Falls, NY/Monroe CC)
and Heather Pothier (Truro, Nova Scotia/St. Andrew’s) and
three freshmen. Rookie Natalie Desjardins (Haileybury, Ontario/Ecole
Secondaire Ste) was the Blackbirds top performer in the fall,
including a second place finish at the ECAC Championship.
LIU continues its
spring schedule at the Fairfield Spring Invitational in Myrtle
Beach, S.C. on Mar. 12-14. |
