Veronica Lopes Wins at Fairfield Invitational For Her Third Career Victory; LIU Notches Third Triumph in a Major Tournament

3/7-8/05 -- Senior Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario) rode an opening-round 76 that lifted her to a third individual title, a one-shot triumph with 159 at the Fairfield Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Lopes opened the tournament by falling one shot off her career best set October 15, when she won the Hofstra Fall Invitational. She closed with 83, good enough to hold off Allison Schick of Fairfield and Sara McFadden of Charleston Southern by one shot.

The Blackbirds dominated the field with five players finishing in the top 11. Tracey Chew (Sacramento, Calif.) closed fourth with 165 and fellow senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario) was tied for fifth with 166, including a final-round 79. Sophomore Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) finished tied for ninth with 173 and senior Amy Kitchen (Staten Island, N.Y.) was 11th with 175.

LIU rolled to a 31-shot victory by posting the tournament's two best rounds with 332 and 331. Its total of 663 bested Charleston Southern's mark of 694 for their third victory in a tournament with at least five teams. It also won the Hartford Invitational on April 28, 2003 and the Central Connecticut State Invitational, held October 10-11, 2003.

The Blackbirds return to action March 27 at the Monmouth Quad-Match in Fort Monmouth, N.J.
