Shauna Wilde Captures First Individual Title by Winning the Hofstra Spring Invitational; Women's Golf Wins Team Title

4/5/05 -- Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario) captured her first individual title by winning a three-way playoff for Long Island, which was victorious at the Hofstra Spring Invitational in Port Washington, N.Y.

Wilde shot a final-round 84 to close with 168 and tie senior teammate Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario) as well as Hofstra's Tamara Bargiel, the opening-round leader. Lopes carded 82 in the final round.

Wilde won the crown when she pared the 394-yard ninth hole, a hole that yielded just three pars in regulation. Lopes and Bargiel both bogeyed.

It was LIU's fourth individual victory and second this season. Lopes has the other three, including the Fairfield Invitational from March 7-8 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Blackbirds shot a final-round 339 to end the championship with 685 for their fourth team title in a major tournament, bettering second-place Hofstra by nine shots. Senior Tracey Chew (Sacramento, Calif.) carded a final-round 83 to close fourth with 169.

It was LIU's second team title of the season as it captured the Fairfield Invitational.

The Blackbirds will compete April 12-13 at the Hartford Invitational, site of their first team championship in 2003.
