5/7/05 -- Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario) shot a final-round 81 to close with a three-day total of 249 at the Central Regional of the NCAA Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

Wilde, the Northeast Conference individual champion and the league’s Women’s Golfer of the Year, fired her best round of the tournament in her final 18 holes as a Blackbird. She played the back nine in 39, including six pars, after going out with 42 that featured a birdie on the second hole.

The three-time All-NEC honoree opened Thursday with 85 and shot 83 on Friday.

Senior Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario), also a three-time all-conference member playing her last collegiate round, shot a final-round 87 to go with her 88 from Thursday and 85 on Friday for 260. Lopes notched a pair of birdies today to equal her total from Friday.

Senior Tracey Chew (Sacramento, Calif.) used a birdie on the 12th hole to help fire 89 for the second time in the championship, finishing with 269. Senior Amy Kitchen (Staten Island, N.Y.) shot 92 to close with 273 and sophomore Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) ended with 93 for 274.

Despite the Blackbirds closing 21st at the regional, the team enjoyed their best season in their four-year existence. The squad posted three tournament titles with Lopes notching a pair of individual crowns in addition to Wilde’s league championship.

LIU was competing in its first NCAA Regional after winning its first conference title April 19 by 10 shots over three-time defending champion St. Francis (PA).
