Women's Golf Picked to Finish Tied for Second in NEC; Men Tabbed Fourth

3/23/05 -- Long Island's women's golf team was selected to finish tied for second in the Northeast Conference and the men's squad, the defending league champions, was picked fourth based on a vote by the league's coaches.

The women's squad has closed second in the league each of the last three seasons and this year features a roster with four seniors. They include Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario), Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario), Tracey Chew (Sacramento, Calif.) and Amy Kitchen (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Lopes is coming off her third career individual title March 8 at the Fairfield Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wilde made the all-conference team last year for the second time and sophomore Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) was a first-time honoree.

The men's team last year won its first NEC title and clinched its first trip to the NCAA Championship. The Blackbirds on the final day rallied to shoot 295 for a 612 total, upending Robert Morris by nine shots.

All five on the squad are seniors, including All-NEC members Brad Corcoran (Mississauga, Ontario), Mike Munoz (Yucaipa, Calif.) and Kevin Allo (San Bernardino, Calif.). Corcoran on March 13 won his first individual crown at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C. Munoz and Allo each finished last year's championship tied for second.

St. Francis (PA) was picked to win both the men's and women's championships. The NEC Women's Championship takes place April 18-19 at the Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick, Md. The men's tournament is May 2-3 at the QuickSilver Golf in Midway, Pa.
