Shauna Wilde Sits Atop Leader Board at NEC Championship; LIU Holds Six-Shot Edge

4/18/05 -- Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario) tied the tournament record by shooting a career-best 73 for Long Island, which holds a six-shot lead after the opening round at the Northeast Conference Championship in Frederick, Md.

Wilde -- who shaved three strokes off her career best -- leads by one shot over senior teammate Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario), who also set a new career mark. Wilde, the 2002 NEC runner-up, went out in 37 and came back in 36 for the round's best score on the final nine.

That helped the Blackbirds, runner-ups in their three seasons of existence, shoot 322 to lead reigning champion St. Francis (PA). Wagner is third with 330 and Monmouth is fourth at 331.

Wilde's score tied that of Katie Thorne at the 2003 championship in Colts Neck, N.J. Lopes now owns the third-best championship mark in conference annals.

Tracey Chew (Sacramento, Calif.) is tied for 16th with 85, fellow senior Amy Kitchen (Staten Island, N.Y.) carded 90 and sophomore Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) fired 91.

Also in hunt are Leah Steinmiller of Central Connecticut State with 75, defending champion Alysee Sweeney of Wagner with 77 and Tara Schloss of St. Francis (PA) rounds out the top five with 79.

The final round takes place Tuesday, also at Clustered Spires Golf Club.
