Shauna Wilde Named NEC Women's Golfer of the Year

4/29/05 -- Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario), coming off her first Northeast Conference individual title, today was rewarded for a standout season as she was named the NEC Women’s Golfer of the Year based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

Wilde cemented the award from April 18-19, when she shot 149 to break her own tournament record by seven shots and capture the NEC title by three. The three-time all-conference honoree opened with a career-best 73 to set the single-round record at the championship and closed with 76.

That effort helped the Blackbirds clinch their first NEC title in just the squad’s fourth season of existence. Their total of 645 outdistanced St. Francis (PA), which came in as the three-time defending champion, by 10 shots. It is LIU’s fifth victory in a major tournament and third this season as it also captured the Fairfield Invitational in March and the Hofstra Spring Invitational in April.

Wilde, owner of two of the five individual titles in school history and a sixth-place finisher at last year’s conference tournament, also won the Hofstra Spring Invitational. She has an average of 81.3 shots in 18 rounds this season, including five top-five finishes, and 80.6 over her last seven rounds.

Next up for Wilde and the Blackbirds is a trip to the Central Regional of the NCAA Championship. The regional takes place May 5-7 in Lubbock, Texas.
