Veronica Lopes tabbed NEC Women's Golf Player of the Week

10/19/04 -- Senior Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario), coming of her second tournament victory, today was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the sixth time in her career.

Lopes was victorious in a playoff last Saturday at the Hofstra Fall Invitational, competed at the Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. She carded 75 Saturday for the day’s best round and defeated Jillian Blanchard of Siena on the first extra hole after both closed regulation with 158.

Lopes hit driver and three wood just short of the green in the playoff before she chipped and made her par putt on the 433-yard hole. She owns both individual titles in the team’s four-year history, including the Mount Holyoke Invitational on September 29, 2002.

Her effort helped LIU finish the tournament in third place with 666. Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson Secondary) carded 159 overall to miss the playoff by one shot.

Lopes made the All-NEC team in 2002 and 2003, helping the Blackbirds capture third place at the conference championship each of the last three seasons.

LIU will compete at the Monmouth Quad-Match on Thursday at Suneagles Golf Club in Fort Monmouth, N.J.
