Shauna Wilde Named NEC Women's Golf Player of the Week

4/13/05 -- Senior Shauna Wilde (Mississauga, Ontario), coming off her first individual title for Long Island, today was named Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Player of the Week for the fourth time in her standout career.

Wilde’s latest award comes on the heels of her capturing the Hofstra Spring Invitational, held April 4-5 in Port Washington, N.Y. Wilde shot a final-round 84 to close with 168 and tie senior teammate Veronica Lopes (Mississauga, Ontario) as well as Hofstra’s Tamara Bargiel, the opening-round leader.

The 2002 NEC runner-up won the crown when she pared the 394-yard ninth hole, a hole that yielded just three pars in regulation, with Lopes and Bargiel both making bogey.

It was the Blackbirds’ fourth individual crown -- Lopes owns the first three titles -- and it helped the Blackbirds to their fourth tournament championship. The Blackbirds shot a final-round 339 to end the two-day event with 685, bettering second-place Hofstra by nine shots.

Wilde, who also was tabbed Player of the Week twice as a junior and once as a sophomore, has been playing solidly of late. She is averaging 83.3 shots over her last four rounds that included an eighth-place finish Tuesday at the Hartford Invitational.

LIU seek its first conference title as it competes at the NEC Championship next Monday and Tuesday at Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick, Md. The Blackbirds have finished second at this event each of the last three years.
