Island University women’s lacrosse team posted its first
win of the season, dropping Binghamton, 16-8 Tuesday afternoon
at LIU Field.
Junior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) tallied six goals and an assist
in the victory, followed by senior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson,
N.J.) with four goals and two assists.
Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered three assists
and a score. Classmates Ashley Cockram (Orlando, Fla.) and Nichole
Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) chipped in two goals each.
Freshman goalkeeper Kim Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) recorded 12
saves in her second start.
The Blackbirds (1-4, 0-0 NEC) mounted a 4-1 lead with an eight-meter
free position goal by Lopez.
At the 19:16 mark, McCormick rolled the crease, finding the
upper right corner of the net to give LIU a 5-1 advantage.
Rizzo scored three consecutive goals, pushing the home team
up 8-3. A quickstick from Cockram to Carleton gave the Blackbirds
a 9-3 edge at the break. The smothering LIU defense allowed the
Bearcats nine shots on goal in the first period.
Binghamton cut the margin to six (14-8) with a free position
goal by Danielle Edwards with 1:15 remaining but could get no
closer.
The Bearcats (2-5) were led by Edwards, Heather Grose, and Julia
Demuth with two goals apiece. Grose added four assists. Sandra
Alvarez notched 10 saves.
LIU controlled 13 draws and picked up 31 ground balls. The Blackbirds
converted 4-of-9 free position shots.
