4/7/06 -- Long Island University
dropped a 15-12 double overtime decision to Central Connecticut
State
University in Northeast Conference women’s lacrosse
action at Arute Field on Friday afternoon in New Britain, Conn.
Senior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson,
N.J.) finished with six points –three
goals and three assists-and classmate Nichole Lopez (Highland
Mills, N.Y.) had a team-high four goals. Seniors Ashley Cockram
(Orlando, Fla.) and Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) each added
two goals, respectively.
CCSU got off to a fast start,
registering a pair of goals in the first 2:47 of play. Senior
attacker
Amy Clark
tallied the
game’s first goal 10 seconds into the game and assisted
on the second one at the 27:13 mark.
The Blackbirds tallied the game’s next three scores over
a 3:43 span. McCormick found the cage off an assist from Amy
Rizzo just over three minutes into the game. Carleton would tie
the game with her 17th score of the year and then assist on Lopez’ goal
at the 23:12 mark to give LIU a 3-2 advantage.
The teams traded goals over the next six minutes as neither
program led by more than two goals. The Blackbirds held a 6-5
edge at the break.
McCormick opened the second frame
with her second goal of the game off an assist by Rizzo. The
assist
was Rizzo’s
third of the game and would give LIU a 7-5 lead with 29 minutes
to
play.
CCSU, however, roared back and over a five-minute span scored
four straight and took a 9-7 advantage. Four different players
accounted for goals during the spurt as Lopez ended the LIU drought
with an unassisted score at the 23:31 mark to close to 9-8.
The Blue Devils stretched their lead to 12-9 on two goals from
Adams and a score by Stephanie John, but Lopez scored twice in
the final 10 minutes aid the Blackbirds rally. Her free position
goal with eight seconds left in regulation tied the contest at
12-12 and sent the game into the extra periods.
CCSU’s Johns saw her first
shot in overtime hit the post and bounce back to her. She quickly
took the rebound
and fired
back into the cage for the score and a 13-12 lead. The home team
would add two more in the two three-minute overtime periods to
seal the win.
The Blackbirds return to action on Thursday, April 13, hosting
Quinnipiac at 3:00 p.m.
