3/2/06
-- Junior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) tallied five goals and an assist but it was not enough as the Long Island University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Canisius, 9-8, at University Field in Fairfield, Conn.

Sophomore Lauren Walsh scored four goals for the Golden Griffins (1-0) while freshman Ashley Gray had a goal and three assists.

The Blackbirds got off to a quick start as Rizzo scored on a free position shot in the opening minute of play. Canisius countered with three unanswered scores and a goal by Erica Nasca off a feed from Gray gave the Griffs a 3-1 advantage.

Rizzo, a second team All-Northeast Conference selection a year ago, scored the next two goals for LIU to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Following a goal by Walsh for Canisius, senior Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) found the back of the net as the Blackbirds went into halftime down, 5-4.

After trading scores to start the second half, Rizzo notched two unassisted goals in a 50-second span to give LIU a 7-6 edge with 20:12 remaining.

Walsh and Gray teamed up for the equalizer at the 15:55 mark for Canisius, beginning a string of three consecutive goals that put the team on top, 9-7, with a little over 10 minutes left in the contest.

A beautiful feed from senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) found Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) in front of the net and Garcia cashed in, cutting the LIU deficit in half with 3:28 remaining.

The Golden Griffins, however, controlled the ensuing draw control and held possession for the balance of the game to secure the victory.

Senior Amanda Childress (Leonardtown, Md.) made five saves in net for the Blackbirds. Rasheeda Brenton was tough early for the Griffs, stopping several chances in the first five minutes and registering seven total saves to get the victory.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at LIU Field in Brooklyn, N.Y., but unplayable field conditions forced the game to be moved to the Fairfield University campus.

Long Island returns to action at home on Sunday, Mar. 5 against Siena at 2:00 p.m.
