Lacrosse Falls 17-16 to Iona in Overtime

-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team dropped its third straight game on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field, falling to non-conference opponent Iona, 17-16 in double overtime.

Junior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and freshman Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) each notched four goals. Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and classmate Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored two goals and two assists. Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) and Samantha Fishbeck (Btitleimore, Md.) had two goals and one score, respectively.

LIU (1-7, 0-1 NEC) opened the first frame with a 5-0 spurt that featured two goals apiece from McCormick and Rizzo. The Gaels responded with four unanswered scores, cutting the margin to one (5-4) with 9:58 remaining.

Rizzo scored her 24th goal of the season at the 7:49 mark and found Lopez for a score three minutes later to push the visitors to a 7-4 lead. The Blackbirds held a 9-5 advantage at the break behind scores from Garcia and Fishbeck.

In the second half, Funk tallied two goals in a 15-second span. The game see-sawed back-and-forth as the teams traded goals. With 19:14 showing, Iona mounted another 5-0 run capped off by a goal from Jaclyn O’Leary, once again pulling the host to within a goal,13-12.

Lopez and Rizzo registered scores but with 28 seconds left in regulation, Cavanaugh found the net to tie the contest at 15-15, sending the game into the first overtime.

Cavanaugh scored an unassisted goal with 1:46 on the clock in the extra period to give Iona its first lead of the day (15-16) but Funk countered with a goal 36 seconds later to tie the game at 16-16. The Gaels’ Jillian Beck could not convert a free position shot, forcing a second overtime period.

With 1:06 left to play in the second OT, Sara Beth Henry scored the game winning goal off a feed from Rachel O’Leary.

Iona was led by Cavanaugh with seven goals and two assists, followed by J. O’Leary with five goals and an assist.
Goalkeeper Roxanne Monte recorded six saves.

The Blackbirds travel to Moon Township, Pa. to take on Robert Morris on Friday, March 31. The opening draw is at 1:00 pm.
