4/21/06 --Long Island University women’s lacrosse
team extended its win streak to two, recording a 9-8 triumph
over Mount St. Mary’s in Northeast Conference action
Friday afternoon at LIU Field.
Junior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.)
collected five goals in the victory, bringing the Blackbirds’ scoring
leader’s
season total to 47.
Freshman goalkeeper Kim Campbell
(Malvern, Pa.) recorded a season-best 13 saves including several
crucial second
half stops. Campbell held the Mount scoreless over
the final 16:35
to help preserve a one-goal advantage.
Following a
restart in which she was caught out of the goal crease and
leading
by the slimest of margins, Campbell made a beautiful
diving stop of a Mountaineer shot to keep the Blackbirds
ahead.
LIU (5-11, 3-4 NEC) scored two
goals over a one minute span, courtesy of Rizzo and senior
Jackie McCormick (Liverpool,
N.Y.), to take a 2-1 lead at the 26:03 mark. With lightening
reflexes,
Rizzo scooped up a deflected shot and parlayed the rebound
for a score to push the Blackbirds to a 3-2 edge with 19:29
showing.
The teams traded goals for most of the opening stanza with neither
side leading by more than one score. The Blackbirds ended the
first period with a 6-5 advantage.
LIU stretched to a two goal lead (7-5) with a free position
shot by Rizzo with 23:14 on the clock. The Mount responded with
an unassisted goal from Katelyn Catanese, cutting the margin
to 7-6.
With 16:35 remaining, the Mountaineers’ Ellie
Keener nailed a shot, tying the game at 8-8. Senior Chrissie
Carleton (Jackson,
N.J.) scored the game-winner off a feed from fellow classmate
Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) at the 13:16 mark.
The Blackbirds celebrate Senior Day and wrap up the regular
season on Sunday, April 23 with a NEC match-up against Wagner
at 1:00 pm.
